With more homes getting back to basics and being green, a lot of little chickens are being given a second chance at life.
The Battery Hen Adoption Project is once again looking for long term loving homes where ex-battery hens can live a stress free and happy existence.
The hens very quickly adjust to life outside the cage and are acting like “normal” chickens within a day. They should continue to lay for many years which in turn provides the adoptive family healthier eggs that have been produced without causing suffering to others. If the hens are fed kitchen scraps, this also reduces land required for land fill. The hens make wonderful companion animals. So all round, it is a win win situation!
The hens are bought from a battery farm just prior to when they would have been slaughtered and are about eighteen months old then. The amount of birds bought depends on the amount of people who contact the Project to let them know they have a home available.
The Project is currently seeking Sunshine Coast homes for their next round of adoptions in April.

The Battery Hen Adoption Project was started in Brisbane, Queensland to give ex-battery hens a second chance at life.
We look for long term loving homes where the rescued hens can live a happy life after being in a battery cage. They adjust to life outside the cage very quickly and are acting like “normal” chickens within a day.
The hens should continue to lay for many years which in turn provides the adoptive family healthier, free range eggs that have been produced without causing suffering to others.
As well, if you eat the eggs yourself, or give them away, it reduces the number of eggs commercially produced. If you feed your hens kitchen scraps you are also reducing land fill.
Chickens make wonderful companion animals and are very social and intelligent creatures. So all round, it is a win win situation.
